Building a Better Future: Melbourne Jenkins’ Dedication to Christmas in April

For 34 years, Melbourne Jenkins has been a dedicated force behind Christmas in April Prince George’s County, committed to improving the lives of seniors and veterans by making their homes safer and more accessible. Now serving as the Executive Board Secretary & Media Coordinator, Melbourne plays a crucial role in ensuring the organization’s continued success and impact.

His journey with Christmas in April began with a simple but powerful motivation—to provide safe and livable homes for those who need it most. Over the years, he has seen firsthand how small acts of service can make a profound difference in someone’s life. One of his most memorable experiences was helping to renovate a kitchen and make a bathroom handicap accessible for an elderly woman, allowing her to welcome her extended family for Christmas dinner. It was a moment that reinforced why this work is so important—not just for home repairs, but for the dignity and joy it restores to homeowners.

As Executive Board Secretary, one of Melbourne’s primary responsibilities is to maintain reports and minutes, ensuring that the leadership team stays aligned and focused on their mission. But his contributions go far beyond administrative tasks. His experience as a retired Safety & Environmental Director gives him a unique perspective on the importance of safe living conditions, and he remains deeply involved in the planning and execution of CIA projects.

For Melbourne, Christmas in April is more than just an annual event—it’s a lifeline for homeowners who lack the means to make necessary repairs. His dedication to the mission and goals of the organization is unwavering, and he is incredibly proud of the volunteers, businesses, and organizations that come together each year to make it all possible. Looking ahead, he hopes to see greater outreach through social media and news organizations, ensuring that more people are aware of the impact and longevity of the program.

Outside of his work with CIA, Melbourne enjoys retirement by spending time with his son, his large extended family, and friends. He has a passion for travel and cooking, finding joy in bringing people together over a good meal.

When asked what he wants to share with the community, his message is clear: “This is an amazing and caring program that, by spending just a few hours of your time, makes a real and lifelong impact on those less fortunate.” Through his dedication and leadership, Melbourne continues to be a pillar of strength for Christmas in April, ensuring that the organization thrives for years to come.
