A Heart for Service: Dr. Sheryl Smith’s Dedication to Christmas in April

For over a decade, Dr. Sheryl Smith has been a cornerstone of compassion and service within the Christmas in April Prince George's County organization. Her unwavering dedication to enhancing the lives of seniors and individuals with disabilities has profoundly impacted the community. Currently serving as a Board Member, Dr. Smith brings a wealth of experience and a heartfelt commitment to her role.

Dr. Smith's journey with CINA began ten years ago, inspired by the organization's mission to assist seniors and those with disabilities in maintaining their homes and yards. "The caring hearts of CINA extend help to seniors and the disabled, fixing up their homes and yards," she reflects. This alignment with her personal values led her to take on the role of Senior Care Pastor and Director of the Senior Group at the First Baptist Church of Glenarden, where she oversees outreach initiatives that mirror CINA's mission.

In her capacity as a Board Member for nearly a year and a half, Dr. Smith actively contributes to strategic decisions and organizational developments. She also oversees the church's Senior Group Outreach Director and teams dedicated to home and yard improvements for seniors and the disabled. Her leadership ensures that both CINA and the church's initiatives operate in harmony, maximizing their collective impact.

One of Dr. Smith's most cherished memories with CINA involves witnessing the heartfelt gratitude of the seniors they assist. "Seeing the seniors' overjoyed expressions and listening to their thankfulness that a group would take the time to extend a helping hand," she shares, encapsulates the essence of her commitment.

To Dr. Smith, CINA represents more than just an organization; it's a community dedicated to the well-being of others. She takes pride in CINA's proactive approach, noting, "I am most proud that CINA not only hears the needs of seniors and the disabled but helps to actually meet those needs."

Looking ahead, Dr. Smith envisions a future where CINA expands its reach through increased volunteer participation. She hopes for the establishment of a recognition night to honor the volunteers' hard work and dedication. "My hopes for CINA are to recruit more volunteers to meet the needs of more seniors and the disabled," she expresses.

Beyond her work with CINA and the church, Dr. Smith actively participates in the annual Gobble Trot on Thanksgiving Day in Washington, D.C., supporting the So Others Might Eat (S.O.M.E.) organization to raise funds for feeding the hungry. In her leisure time, she enjoys traveling, embracing new experiences and cultures.

Dr. Smith encourages businesses and individuals alike to connect with CINA, emphasizing, "CINA is a good organization for businesses to connect to if they want to participate in helping to meet the needs of others who need a helping hand." Her unwavering dedication continues to inspire those around her, fostering a community rooted in compassion and service.
